All About Russian Food

The food and soft drink giant will buy 66% of Wimm-Bill-Dann (WBD) for $3.8 bil, or $33 per U.S. share. If the U.S. and Russian gov’ts approve, PepsiCo (PEP) plans to buy the rest of the Russian dairy products and fruit juice company. Pepsi says the deal will be accretive to earnings wit…hin a year. WBD shot up 28% to 31.34. Pepsi fell less than 1%.

Irina sent me this new way to prepare turkey for Thanksgiving.

Here is a new way to prepare your Thanksgiving or Christmas Turkey.

1. Cut out aluminum foil in desired shapes.
2. Arrange the turkey in the roasting pan, position the foil carefully (see below )
3. Roast according to your own recipes and serve.
4. Watch your guests’ faces.

Ingredients:

- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 lb. ground beef
- 1/2 lb. ground pork
- 2 medium onions, finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp. black pepper

Sift the flour into a large pile on a clean surface. Make an indentation in the top and crack the eggs into that indentation. Adding the warm water gradually, knead the dough vigorously. Cover the dough and let stand for 30 minutes.

In a separate bowl, mix the beef, pork, onions, pepper, and ½ tsp salt together.

Working on a flour-dusted surface, roll the dough into a long “snake” one inch in diameter. Cut the dough at one-inch intervals and roll the pieces into circles 1/16 to 1/32 of an inch thick. Place a tablespoon of the meat filling in the center and fold the dough over, pinching it to completely seal the pelmeni into a small packet and turn the corners to face each other, making a small circle.

Boil a generous amount of water with 1 tsp. salt. Drop the pelmeni into the boiling water. They are ready to eat when they float to the top and stay there.

The hottest topic in the Russian financial market news for the past couple of weeks has been…buckwheat. Even Google Trends show the recent exponential increase in search frequency and news references to the word “buckweat” in Russian…
The situation in the Russian market with this cereal has been quite a craze. From the beginning of the the year its price on the Russian market has increased by 85%. And in August it was quite an acceleration, as buckweat prices in a month alone rose by 33%, on average, reaching even 70% in some regions.

What’s going on there?

According to Russian officials, there is not much fundamentals in that. Russian President Medvedev himself was out saying that the price increase is purely speculative.
